In June, 2006 the country of Honduras, C.A. formally announced its interest in becoming part of the Model Forest Regional Network for Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC-Net) and was accepted, thereby also officially becoming a member of the International Model Forest Network (RIBM) - currently comprised of 40 Model Forest sites located in more than 20 countries worldwide, and that collaborates with more than 900 organizations both at the local and international levels.

The first Model Forest initiative in Honduras is currently being developed in the Department of Atlantida, on the North Coast of the country, by a group of committed local stakeholders and with the support of international donors.

In November of 2006, during the second annual meeting of the Board of Directors of LAC-Net in Esquel Argentina, the Atlantida Model forest was officially integrated into the Model Forest Regional Network for Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC-Net) as the pilot Model Forest site in Honduras.  Since then, a second site has been proposed and is currently being developed in the Department of Yoro.
